Name: Kevin Sunshein, DPM
Practice location: Dayton, Ohio
How many years have you been in practice? 42 years, seven of which were military army hospital assignments
Who were your mentors? Drs. Ron Hetman, Doug Bierne, Lawrence Harkless, Bob Levine
What do you like the best about your practice? Helping my patients return to activities that they love but can't due to foot and ankle pain.
What do you like to do outside of work? I like to play golf, fly my airplane and spend time outdoors. Recently, my wife and I discovered ballroom dancing and are very active taking lessons and making new friends.
What is your most significant contribution to your profession or community? I have mentored several students to enter into the medical profession, specifically podiatry. I feel the best way to promote our profession is to show young people how we help our patients.
What is something people may not know about you? I have been a private pilot for 25 years which had always been a dream for me inspired by my father who took flying lessons but unfortunately never obtained his license. I took his dream and made it mine. I have flown all over the country in single engine airplanes flying as far as Washington state from Ohio and as far south as the Florida Keys. I have flown my own airplane to Michigan, Buffalo NY, Portland ME, New Orleans, Orlando, Nashville, Savannah and Hilton Head Island.
Professional statement: I have thoroughly enjoyed my profession as a podiatrist. I have trained with both orthopedic surgeons and podiatric surgeons and have always sought to be an ambassador to our profession. Dr. Harkless always taught his residents to interact with all medical specialties to promote our profession. I realize how special we are in treating the human body. Podiatrists are the experts in foot and ankle pathology and should be proud of that. I am proud of all the accomplishments our profession has made over the 42 years that I have been a podiatrist. As I continue in our profession, I endeavor to promote podiatric medicine to the new generation to follow.
